Samsung: Theater For All Ears

In Brazil, millions of people that suffer from hearing loss have had to abide unaccommodating experiences at the theater, with most theaters lacking the option of an interpreter or on-stage subtitles. That’s why Leo Burnett teamed up with Samsung and MediaMonks to create a deaf-friendly theater experience using the Samsung Gear VR and Galaxy smartphones. Using speech-recognition, we created an VR application that shows live subtitles for the on-stage dialogue, enabling people with hearing loss to follow the play through one of the Gear VR headsets provided by Samsung.

In Brazil, a population of more than 9.7 million deaf people have had to abide unaccommodating experiences at the theater. Even today, most theaters lack the option of an interpreter or on-screen subtitles, so Samsung and MediaMonks teamed up to create a deaf-friendly experience using Oculus VR goggles and a Galaxy smartphone. Through these and speech recognition technology, we created an app that projected live-action subtitles onto the phone screens attached to each person’s goggles.
